Published - May 29, 2024

Are you interested in a career as a surgical technician? Are you wondering how to become certified? You are not alone, and CBD College can help. Let us prepare you for a career as a certified surgical technician and start helping others in the process. It’s a win-win.

What is a Surgical Technologist?

A surgical technologist supports surgeons during surgical procedures in operating rooms. During school, they learn the theory and application of sterile techniques, medical terminology, human anatomy, and surgical procedures. Surgical technologists are responsible for preparing the operating room and helping surgeons during the hygiene portion of a surgical procedure. They support the procedure by handing instruments to the surgeon and the patient’s vital signs. They are an extra pair of hands for the surgeon during an operation. The surgical technologist prepares the surgical table and equipment and preps the patients with shaving, disinfection, and draping. They also anticipate the surgeon’s needs and monitor patients under anesthesia.

Surgical technologists work alongside patients, surgeons, nurses, and other medical professionals in the operating room. They may even manage a team of surgical technicians who sterilize the surgery room, tools, and instruments, care for surgical patients in pre-op, transport patients to and from surgery, and manage a patient’s family members to keep them educated and in the know.

How Do You Become a Certified Surgical Technologist?

There are a few steps to becoming a certified surgical technologist. These steps include:

Step #1: Complete Surgical Technologist Program

The first step toward becoming a certified surgical technologist is completing the Surgical Technologist program at CBD College. Not only is our program accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), but we prepare you to be a successful surgical technologist by learning with state-of-the-art mock surgery centers and with actual on-the-job experience in a clinical externship. When you graduate from CBD College, you are fully trained and have the confidence to step into the operating room with your head held high.

Step #2: Gain Experience in Rotations or Assisting Surgeons

Putting theory into practice with hands-on work experience is always a good idea. You can complete rotations or work by assisting surgeons to cement your knowledge of surgical procedures and protocols. Then, you are ready to complete the exams that prove your proficiency in the practical skills of a surgical technologist.

Step #3: Apply for the Certification

A surgical technologist with a diploma and some work experience can apply for the certification offered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. After passing the exam, you achieve the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) moniker.

Why Become a Surgical Technologist?

There are many reasons people become surgical technologists. Some of the rewarding reasons include:

Helping Others

A great reason to become a surgical technologist is the ability to help others during their most vulnerable situations. Patients who undergo surgery can have anxiety, and you get to comfort and educate them, so they are prepared physically and mentally. It can be rewarding knowing that you are helping your fellow community members have a better and healthier life.

Working in a Team Setting

As a surgical technologist, you are the surgeon’s second set of hands. You also work alongside nurses, anesthesiologists, and other medical professionals. Medical care is a team sport, and being a part of the team can be extremely rewarding.

An Interest in Healthcare

Do you have an interest in healthcare? Enjoy learning about medical procedures, medications, and journal articles on healthcare. If so, becoming a surgical technologist may be the right career path for you. As a surgical technologist, you dive deep into the technology and medical procedures that save lives and change them for the better. When you do something you live, you don’t work a day in your life.
